Fruit and vegetable from Germany
In Germany the
average harvest is between 1.3 and 1.5 million tons fruit. Thereof the main crop are
apples with approx. 900,000 to 1.1 million tons and a share of approximately 75%
of the entire fruit harvest. Beside the main cultivation of the Jona group new apple varieties as ' Braeburn' , ' Gala' ,
' Elstar' , ' Pinova' , ' Topaz' are cultivated. Further important fruit are
strawberries, cherries, plums, pears as well as red and black currents, raspberries and blueberries. Scarcely two
thirds of the pome fruit and berries are consumed as fresh produce, a good
third is used as processed
fruit. In Germany approximately 10,500 horticulture farms produce vegetables. On
a surface of scarcely 115000 ha approx. 3.3 million tons of vegetables are
produced. The supply of vegetable covers different kinds of cabbage, root and
tuber vegetables, leaf and fruit vegetables, herbs and salads uncovered or under
glass depending upon season. Beyond that asparagus, fresh mushrooms as well as
spice and medical plants are cultivated.
