Germany is Europe´s biggest supplier of milk and dairy products. The variety of dairy products is enormous, ranging from regular whole milk and buttermilk to joghurt, quark, cheese, butter and whey. Cheese is the main export product of the German milk and dairy industry. Germany has a long tradition of cheese-making and because of its varying landscapes, methods of production and regional traditions, it boasts more than 600 different types of cheese. More recently the demand for organic dairy products as well as for products for special diets, for example lactose free products, has increased significantly.
